Heading into his second year in office Alabama Governor Robert Bentley(R) feels good about his controversial budget proposal becoming law and he is also confident changes can be made to the state’s anti-illegal immigration law that will satisfy most concerns.
Bentley made his comments in an extended interview with the Mobile Press Register.
On the issue of the state budget, Bentley said most legislators don’t even know what is in the budget they are criticizing, but once they see the limited options before them, he believes they will adopt his plans.
On immigration, Bentley said the most important part of the controversial law is the requirement that employers take steps to ensure they are not hiring illegal immigrants. The interview suggests that is the core element of the bill Bentley will not compromise on. Bentley also acknowledges that he knew the immigration law was flawed when he signed it, but it was the best he could do in the time he had.
